 ABOUT US

WHAT IS CHIRO?
Martin-Choy-DC1-300x176.jpg

Chiropractic care focuses on the disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and the effects of these disorders on the overall health of an individual. It is a safe, effective method of treating the body through hands-on treatment that reduces pain, increases motion, and restores function without the use of drugs or surgical treatment.

The purpose of chiropractic care is to restore joint mobility by physically applying controlled force into joints that have become restricted in movement. These restrictions are usually a result of soft tissue damage caused by a single traumatic event, such as whiplash in a motor vehicle accident, or through repetitive stress, such as sitting down incorrectly for an extended period of time.

Tissues that are injured begin to go through changes that cause inflammation, pain and reduced function—creating adhesions within and between them. Adhesions cause the motion of muscles or joints to become limited, resulting in various symptoms including pain, weakness, reduced range of motion, numbness and tingling. By manipulating and adjusting the affected joint or tissue area, mobility is restored, which helps to alleviate pain and muscle tightness—allowing the area to heal.

At Choy Chiropractic, we provide advanced spinal manipulation and soft-tissue treatment modalities that are safer, more comfortable and much more effective than some invasive medical procedures. We also provide customized therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises that patients can do in the comfort of their own homes, as well as advanced sports related training advice.

Active Release Technique

Have you heard of Active Release Technique? It is a soft-tissue management system based on the principle that muscles, nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue develop adhesions within and between them after cumulative injuries. These adhesions cause the motion of muscles or joints to be altered, resulting in a wide variety of symptoms including pain, weakness, reduced range of motion, numbness and tingling.

To be an ART® provider, Dr. Choy had to complete extensive hands on instruction, written/practical testing, and be trained to palpate and treat more than 300 muscular and facial injuries and over 100 nerve entrapments. His many years of experience in this technique have given him the honor to work on many Olympic athletes like Meb Keflezighi: silver medalist in the marathon at the Athens Olympic Games and professional boxers: “Sugar” Shane Mosley: WBA Welterweight Champion.

ART® is used to treat a variety of conditions including plantar fasciitis, headaches, sciatica, rotator cuff syndrome, and TMJ. ART® is also used to treat post-surgical scar tissue and peripheral nerve entrapments like carpal tunnel syndrome.

Graston Technique

The Graston Technique® incorporates a patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue obilization that enables clinicians to effectively detect and treat scar tissue and restrictions that affect normal function.

The Technique:

  • Separates and breaks down collagen cross-links, and splays and stretches connective tissue and muscle fibers

  • Increases skin temperature

  • Facilitates reflex changes in the chronic muscle holding pattern

  • Alters spinal reflux activity (facilitated segment)

  • Increases the rate and amount of blood flow to and from the area

  • Increases cellular activity in the region, including fibroblasts and mast cells

  • Increases histamine response secondary to mast cell activity

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Chinese Medicine, as a holistic medicine, works with balancing the physiological process of the human body. When the digestive, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, musculoskeletal, and reproductive systems are functioning harmoniously, health is achieved. If the physiological functions of the body systems are imbalanced or influenced by the negative factors (stress, poor diet and lifestyle, environmental factors, injury), disease results.

Acupuncture works to harmonize the physiological functions of the organs and body systems. Qi (pronounced “chee”) is a concept of Oriental philosophy that can be difficult to explain. In the simplest description, Qi can be likened to the energy of the human body, when flowing freely, one experiences optimum health and well-being. Through inserting very fine needles into the skin, acupuncture can release these energy blockages, thus restoring the body’s natural balance. Acupuncture taps into the body’s own innate ability to heal itself.

Form a physiological standpoint, acupuncture can help restore homeostasis. Scientific studies have shown that acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain-killers, thus explaining the acupuncture’s effect of reducing pain. Acupuncture can also modulate the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain, thus influencing mood and easing such emotional ailments as depression and anxiety.

“Dr Martin Choy is one of the best chiropractors I have worked with in the past 3 years. He has a way of listening to what I need and then he is able to fix and work on my needs. I love that he does not just adjust me but also he does the Active Release Technique, which is very important for recovery in my sport. I give Martin a lot of credit for keeping me on the field and able to perform at a high level every Sunday”.

“Running a 50 or 100 mile race takes a serious toll on the body. The training leading up to a race isn’t much easier. My typical weekend run ranges from 25-45 miles. There is no way I could keep up this workload without the help of Dr. Martin Choy. I visit with Dr. Choy regularly to work through the various muscular strains, adhesions, and imbalances that are a normal part of the ultra marathon lifestyle. Over time, Martin has earned my trust and become a good friend in the process. If you are serious about being successful in your sport of choice, I highly recommend Dr. Choy.”

“I came to Dr. Choy after almost a year of constant pain in my neck, shoulders and back.  I had to deal with headaches and muscle spasms regularly.  After 3 months of regular treatment with Dr. Choy I not only have been freed from the headaches and spasms but I am now able to work to improve my body on a higher level.  I am a professional ballet dancer and have been since the age of 14.  I have battled with tightness and tension in my muscles for years.  Ballet is a very precise training of every muscle in your body, because of my posture and tension I was hitting a wall in my training.  I felt there was no hope for my body to improve. Dr. Choy’s treatment has helped me find new levels of my dance training.   I no longer feel that I have to settle for a body that is not working and improving.  I recommend Dr. Choy not only for the major pains that get in the way of life but also for athletes professional or amateur that have a desire to improve the body for their craft.”
